Music plays a prominent part in the curriculum. All children from Kindergarten to Year 6 have Music lessons with a subject specialist. Within their lessons the pupils are introduced to a wide range of instruments, and are encouraged to work together on compositional activities. There is an emphasis on singing throughout the school with regular hymns in assembly. With a strong team of dedicated peripatetic music teachers, the school benefits from being able to offer a wide range of instruments for the children to learn on a one to one basis. These include 'cello, clarinet, drums, flute, guitar, piano, oboe, saxophone and violin as well as the opportunity to have individual singing lessons. Children are encouraged to share their musical ability and gain in confidence through performances in assembly and during class Music lessons. Children look forward to performing in the Lent term concerts and particularly talented musicians are invited to perform at Prize Giving. Practice is encouraged and several have performed at local festivals, where they have won Merits and Honours. Many children are prepared for external music examinations and, due to the high number of entrants, the school is able to host an Associated Board examiner. Children in Year 2 are introduced to the recorder in class lessons while there is a recorder club at break time.
Especially talented musicians are able to contribute to the School’s musical life through joining the orchestra. The orchestra, although recently formed, has already performed one of the Lent term concerts.
There is a choir, open to pupils from Years 4 to 6 which children are invited to join by the Director of Music. The children learn to sing properly and are challenged with a broad range of music in order to prepare for carol services, festivals and concerts. Next...
