French is taught from Reception to Year 6 by a specialist teacher. The children in Reception up to Year 4 have one lesson per week, rising to two lessons for Years 5 and 6. The lessons are topic based throughout the school: vocabulary is introduced orally and consolidated through games, songs, rhymes and rôle play. Children are encouraged to participate fully in oral activities and develop good listening skills. The written word is introduced in Year 2 and is supported with grammar explanations beginning in Year 3 onwards. Year 6 children annually host a French café and greatly enjoy the experience, whilst their subject knowledge is enhanced with a residential trip to France.
It is felt that learning a language fosters good communication skills and develops positive attitudes towards other cultures.
